Chemical peeling is used to improve the appearance and texture of the skin by applying a chemical solution. This will
cause the top layers of the skin to separate and “peel” off. Ultimately, the result will be a smoother, less pigmented
skin surface. There are three levels of chemical peels: superficial, medium, and deep. The superficial and medium peels
work on the epidermis. Deeper peels go into the dermal layer or reticular layer.
Depending upon the peel treatment you receive you will have a sunburn-like appearance that may last three to seven days. This
depends on your skin type and the depth of the peel. The “peeling” process typically begins on day three; but this can vary
and will last for five to seven days. It is vital that you moisturize and wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher daily.
If you have a history of fever blisters please notify the physician so that we can pre-treat with an anti-viral prior to the
peel. Please notify the nurse or physician if you have a history of keloid scars also. Although the risk is low there is a
possible risk of hypopigmentation (loss of color) or hyperpigmentation (increase of color). You also may have an increased
risk if you take birth control pills or have been recently pregnant. As with everything at Ark-La-Tex Dermatology, our physicians
carefully assess your skin and your medical histroy to determine what is appropriate for you, specifically. We want you to have
the best possible outcome and care.
