Medical micro-needling is also known as Collagen Induction Therapy. By “needling” the skin you are creating new elastin and collagen.
During the procedure, 12 tiny micro-needles are used to create channels which can then be used with topical gels, cream, serums or PRP (platelet rich plasma) to help improve the appearance of the skin.
PRP has been used for many years to promote healing after surgery or sports injuries and a variety of medical conditions. PRP is done by collecting blood from the patient and then spinning it in a centrifuge to separate the platelets from the blood. This “platelet-rich-plasma” is drawn out and can then be used with micro-needling. The PRP is full of growth factors which can aid in the repair process of tissue, including the skin. These promote cell growth, tissue repair and the production of new collagen.
The procedure is very tolerable, but we do use numbing cream for more aggressive treatments. It only takes 15-30 minutes depending upon the size of the treatment area.
Immediately post procedure you will be pink to red. The total healing time depends on the area and condition to be treated. Most patients heal completely within 24-48 hours.
If you have a history of fever blisters please notify the physician so that we can pre-treat with an anti-viral prior to the procedure. Please notify the nurse or physician if you have a history of keloid scars also. Although the risk is low there is a possible risk of hypopigmentation (loss of color) or hyperpigmentation (increase of color). You also may have an increased risk if you take birth control pills or have been recently pregnant.
